james turrell, light reign, 2006
i had wanted to see something made by turrell for some time. little did i know i would see one while visiting the henry museum in seattle. it took some time, and eventually me laying down, before things started to get perceptual. i went from seeing the idea of sky: ‘that thing way out there that contains blue’ to an oval of presence that seemed like a jewel i could touch, an object. i thought that would be the end of it. then after a while a switch in my brain flipped, and i actually could not visually distinguish any lines or distinct color areas. then i would be back to seeing what is in the photograph.
